ITU-T SG 9 Sponsors Major Demonstration of Technologies for Emerging Broadband Services in the Home

Louisville, Colorado, September 6, 2006 - A key group of the International Telecommunications Union working on standards for cable television and other cable telecommunication services (ITU-T Study Group 9) has announced a major demonstration of advanced technologies in Tokyo October 2 and 3. The exhibit, at the Keio Plaza Hotel, will be attended by world leaders in broadband and also will be open to the public on October 3.

"Having a demonstration of this magnitude in conjunction with a meeting of a top global CATV/ telecommunications standardization group is unprecedented in ITU-T history," said Shuichi Matsumoto, Vice President at KDDI Laboratories in Japan and a Study Group (SG) 9 vice chairman.

Seventeen companies from around the world will be part of the demonstration with an emphasis on technologies that support emerging services in consumers' households. The demonstrating companies are: Alticast, ARRIS International Japan, Arroyo, BigBand Networks, Brix, Digital Keystone, Entropic, Gallery IP, Hitron Technologies, Integra5, J:COM, KDDI Labs, NDS, NEC, PerfTech, Sigma Systems and VectroMAX .

Technologies represented include OpenCable™ Application Platform (OCAP™)-enabled interactive video; voice and video over Internet Protocol; high-speed pre-DOCSIS® 3.0 Internet access; home networking of video and data, service management for a cable quad-play (video, wireless, voice and data); multiple advanced video applications and a high-speed broadband download video service.

"This will be a very powerful exhibit of technology enabling advanced broadband capabilities as well as some of the latest broadband applications, many of which are deployed by cable companies in markets around the world," said Study Group 9 Chairman Dr. Richard R. Green, President and CEO of CableLabs®. ITU-T SG 9 is entitled Integrated Broadband Cable Networks and Television and Sound Transmission.

SG 9 will be holding meetings to consider ITU-T Recommendations for approval, as well as working upon additional new ones for future approval, the week of October 2-6 also at the Keio Plaza Hotel. Examples of these are IPCablecom 2.0, DOCSIS 3.0, advanced set-top box for the reception of cable television and other services, and other Internet Protocol services. The demonstrations, separated from the location of the SG 9 meeting will be conducted from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. local time on October 2 and from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 3. There is no charge to attend the exhibit which will be open to the Japanese technical public.
